Title: Programming Intern
Company: PDT Partners, LLC
Contact: Eunice Baek <careers@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> 2126210400
Hiring for: Intern/Co-op
Description:
The PDT team â a proprietary quantitative investment manager â is
offering summer internships for talented programmers.

Custom-designed for highly-technical students who love to program, our
program allows interns to contribute to our technology-critical,
algorithmic trading business. The program is ideal for students looking
for a very challenging experience.

PDT is a fun and collaborative community of tech geeks, science fiction
fans, Lord of the Rings aficionados, musicians, martial artists,
extreme-sports enthusiasts and foodies who enjoy a non-hierarchical,
professional environment.

Our culture encourages and expects significant contribution from all
members. PDT also offers full-time programming and systems engineering
opportunities for outstanding computer science and engineering students.

Real-World Projects:
Work with expert developers to design, develop, debug and test software
components for large scale handling of financial data, for both real-
time and batch processing.

âUnlike homework assignments, these software components are related to
day-to-day production trading and our research process
âMost of our software is developed in-house and is custom-designed for
our algorithmic trading business: commercially available packages simply
donât scale to our needs
âCreativity is necessary to come up with the best possible answers --
many of the problems we face donât have well-defined or understood
solutions

Learn and to correctly apply new idioms, techniques and algorithms in
the following areas:
âProgram correctness (resource management, exception safety,
reentrancy/thread safety)
âMaintainability (portability, good coding practices, adherence to
coding standards, unit testing, documentation)
âEfficiency (optimal data structures/algorithms, understanding of
high-/low- level implications and trade-offs in design choices,
parallelization)

Understand the importance of writing software in an environment where we
also maintain and update the existing code base. This is a highly-
desirable skillset for any developer in any field.

Experience the scale of the problems we face, and how we frequently run
into the limits of current software and hardware. The behavior of these
edge cases can be truly challenging, taking significant time and effort
to debug and identify.

See how the best solutions frequently require intimate understanding of
the underlying hardware, of the operating system and their associated
tool chains â compilers, linkers, executable formats, etc.

Mentoring: Accessible, supportive senior developers are available for
design-sessions, discussions and learning throughout the internship.

Participate: Get to know our collaborative and quirky culture through
movie nights, barbeque outings, bowling matches, strategic board game
nights and other group activities.

Ideal candidates have the following knowledge and/or wish to learn more
about:

âApplying material from the following classics:
oEffective C++, More Effective C++ and Effective STL by Scott
Meyers

oDesign Patterns by Gamma et al
âStandard Library and boost, and using them throughout the summer
âGeneral algorithms/data structures

âMATLAB, numeric algorithms, MATLAB/C++ interfaces
âSystem level programming (memory management, I/O, processes, threading)
