Dear Mark, 
this is not the thyroid. thyroid is a colloid containing gland. This is completely cellular with dividing cells in the centre/medulla and older cells in the outer cortical area. However this is probably not human thymus. The thymus is on the anterior mediastinum, and atrophies after adolescence.

Which actually shows the thyroid. As far as I knew the thymus is located below the collar bones in the breast bone.
