HI
Karen, My
plan is to eventually have a “complete” Optics resource online with
demos and visualizing tools, from high school to grad school level open to
students/ teachers from everywhere. I call this WikiOptics. Of course, this
will take a lot of time, money, and effort, but it’s important to break
ground first. I want
to start this summer with several undergrad students with a project centered
around the “Optical Imaging” course I am teaching in fall (ECE460).
So, I am looking for students with interest in optics, computers, and
education/ dissemination. I am not sure about credit in CS, but I expect to be
no problem receiving that. I am pretty sure that the students will be able to
account this towards electives also. Thank
you for helping spreading this info. Best
regards, Gabriel. ___________________________ GABRIEL

help promote this opportunity, both in the upcoming e-newsletters and by
sharing it with other appropriate students. Can you give me an idea of what
students would be interested in this project (my thought is to have it
announced in relevant classes)? Also, can you help clarify for me if
students would receive research credit in CS, or is it just in ECE? (I’m
not familiar with how this works) A not insignificant part of my job description is working on
initiatives to improve the student experience. The department has identified
increasing undergraduate opportunities as a highly important goal. So,
I’m especially glad to be of service here and think making it part of our
weekly ACM discussion would be a good start. Thanks again! Best, Karen Karen K. Hyman Department of Computer

undergraduate students over the summer in your lab. I've included the leadership
of ACM and the list for students interested in bioengineering topics to this
email. Although many of the students in ACM are either computer science or ECE
students, there are a few others, including mechanical and bioengineering
students. Sigbio, one of the ACM subgroups is focused particularly on
bioengineering topics and might have students interested in working on the live
cell imaging project you spoke of. If you were willing, I am certain the
students in Sigbio would love to have you speak at one of their meetings. Once again, thank you for joining us as lunch and for the pleasant
conversation. Kind regards, Anthony Philipp (217) 377-7386 |
