The mailing list admin can set the list archives to require a list member 
password to access if desired.  In general that is just annoying though as 
anyone can just join the list, although it would keep the content out of 
various search engines.

You can also email admin and ask them to add the list to the robots.txt file 
to keep it from being indexed, similar to the exec-announce exclusion at: 
http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/robots.txt
