successfully compiled a sparc linux kernel.  Have you?

Yes.  And so have many other people.  Sparc linux becomes more
problematic when you start adding things like OpenAFS and various
other patches, simply because they are not tested as heavily with all
architectures.

Well, I also see that g4u is BSD based, as opposted to g4l (which appears to be linux based and isn't the same project.) My bad. If someone has gotten either to work on Sparc, do let us all know. Ideally, I think netbooting would be better than floppies or CD-ROMs, but it should be possible to netboot the kernel on the floppy. Not sure about loading the file system though.
