SigArch Update

by Jonathan Stark

The Special Interest Group for computer architecture is getting a head start on Engineering Open House this year by starting three new projects. These are meant to be quick and easy projects to give our new members some experience in electrical design. We're currently working on a set of message chase lights, a rotating color cylindrical display device, and a simple Field Programmable Gate Array-based sound generator. All three of these projects are geared toward beginners, and no prior experience or knowledge in electronics are required to contribute to any of them.

SigArch is also researching a number of concepts that we hope will eventually become projects. A versatile telphone-computer gateway, a redesigned Apropos Computational Engine (ACE), an electronic nametag/badge, and a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) driver are but a few of the projects we hope to start before the end of the semester.

We still need a lot of help on all of these projects, so if you're interested in electronics, we'd love your help, regardless of your experience or current abilities. Our meetings are Tuesdays at 6pm in 1102 DCL.
