EOH: A Quick Guide to ACM Exhibits

By Mike Khalili

This year ACM and its various special interest groups (SIGS) once again have come up with a wide array of projects. With sixteen projects, ACM is the largest participant in EOH. The projects cover very diverse areas of computing ranging from operating systems to artificial intelligence to computer architecture, and everything in between. The projects are as follows.

SigOps: Space Shooter Targeting System and Embedded OS Design
If you see foam disks flying at you in the halls of DCL, that is SigOps at work. They provide the targeting mechanisms to make this possible.
SigArt: Bandit
Bandit is a robotic humanoid arm coupled with a camera that uses visual feedback and genetic algorithms to seek out and grab objects.
BUG: The Jason Project
BUG is writing software for the BeOS to take make use of a global positioning system (GPS).
LUG: DASH-16 driver
LUG is writing a driver for the DASH-16 A/D data acquisition card to be included in future versions of linux kernel 2.2.
SigArch: The SigArch Computer Architecture
SigArch will be demonstrating the first part of a very large project, designing a complete architecture including an instruction set architecture, a processor implementation, compilers, assemblers, and the like.
SigBio: Say Cheese
SigBio will be writing face recognition software that authenticates individuals based upon data gathered from a camera and video capture card.
SigSoft: ProjectX
ProjectX is a real time strategy game being developed by SigSoft.
SigArch: Scrolling Sign
SigArch will be making a graphical sign controlled through a Java applet.
WinDevils: 3D Drunk Driving simulator
WinDevils will be writing a 3D Windows application to simulating the drunk driving experience.
SigUNIX: UNIX GUIs
SigUNIX will demonstrate modern UNIX GUI desktop systems and their modular graphical monitoring system.
SigMusic: How we make the music
SigMusic will demonstrate how they produce music and demo some new tools.
SigVR: VRML 3D game
SigVR has created a single player game using VRML.
MacWarriors: Mac OS Network Speech-Aware Gaming Environment
MacWarriors will write a series of Mac Games that can be played entirely with spoken commands and using desktop icons as pieces.
SigNet: Voodoo City
Voodoo City is SigNet's online, net-based, Java-powered gaming site.
SigGraph: Multiuser True Physics Engine
SigGraph will write a physics engine for use in network computer games.
SigGraph and SigMusic: Sounds and Visions
Popular shows from previous years' sounds and visions musics and graphics show will be shown all of Saturday and part of Friday in 1320 DCL.
