Over the past few months SIGMobile has been working on PDA controlled, wireless laser tag robots.  The plan is to have an arena (complete with
obstacles) at EOH where people can compete.  It should be a good time for everyone.

We are using radio frequency communications in addition to the 802.11b network in DCL for control and score keeping.  The robots are remote controlled cars with laser tag guns, sensors, and plenty of electronics inside.  We're working with everything from servos to PDA programming, so anyone could find something of interest.  Designing the car has been a learning experience to us all, since we have never done anything like this before.  What this means to you is that
no experience is necessary to help!  We have lots more to do in the next few weeks, so you can dive right in. Please email us and or come to the next meeting.

This weekend, we are expecting to pick up the hardware that Nicholas Haggin, UIUC Alumnus and former SIGMusic member, promised to donate.  The hardware being donated is a Yamaha Windjammer WX-11 (think MIDI saxaphone, and you're getting warmer) and an E-mu Launch Pad MIDI controller.
We are planning on developing our own tone generator for the WX-11, first in hardware, then in software, if possible.  For the past couple of meetings we've been feeling around for prior works, schematics, and suggestions related to our project. We were worried for a while that we would not be given a BT-7 unit, which supplies the WX-11 power through its MIDI-out, power-in cable. I have confirmed that this is not a concern, however, since Mr. Haggin will be donating that device as well.

We're working on brainstorming up new projects too, so if you've got an interest in music hardware, software, or you just like to perform on those sleek, blippy boxes, come on by our meetings in the back section of the ACM office.

Meeting Time: Wednesday 7:00 PM
Place: L510 DCL or 1225 DCL

Have you ever been in DCL and felt the need for a cool, refreshing soda?  If so, you can pre-pay and just pick on up with your i-Card in the ACM office at 1225 DCL.   The talking, web-accessible vending machine is one of SIGBot's projects.  The proceeds are used to fund the future work of the SIG and to maintain the machine.
Visit Caffeine on the web at http://caffeine.acm.uiuc.edu/.  You can pre-pay via pay-pal and then stop by for a soda any time the office is open.

SIGBot is doing some hardcore machine-shop work lately.  Let's just say we've seen hardened steel weep for mercy (and drip).  We're working on our competition robot and hope to be done on time. Our meeting times are completely fluid right now as we meet whenever enough members have free time. So, if you're interested in helping as with our crunch time, email me and I'll let you know what's up.
