Well, EOH is over, and its time to rest up a bit. But not too long, because we still have a lot planned for the rest of this year. Last week we are actually gave workshops on basic Maya modeling for CS 318. This allowed 318 students to create more interesting models for their future graphics MPs.  S&V is just around the corner too.
Sounds and Visions is our joint effort with SIGMusic. It is an annual music and computer graphics celebration for which, SIGGraph members make animated shorts (either pre-rendered or real-time), and then SIGMusic members write accompanying music.   Its on April 26th & 27th, so watch for posters with the time and place and be prepared for some good graphics fun!

SIGMobile has been working on its project, EOH Laser Challenge.  We wanted a project that would make kids excited about engineering and computers, and laser tag robots fit the bill.  We used remote controlled cars, laser tag guns, HP Jornadas, servo controller boards, and all kinds of things we knew nothing about, and came up with a pretty cool project.  Unfortunately, we had a few problems at the last minute, and weren't able to get it working in time for EOH. Nevertheless, everyone is psyched about having a great project next year.
At the last meeting, we had some awesome ideas for projects:

  1. Use the 802.11 access points to do triangulation. A lot of people in DCL use wireless devices connected to the network. Wouldn't it be scary if you could find out exactly where in the building someone else is?
  1. Use image processing and triangulation to guide an autonomous robot though DCL.  This will be quite a challenge during EOH, when there are lots of people walking around.
  2. In any case, we need your help to get these done! We are going to have a cool project for next year, but we need more people to get it done. No experience is necessary. Since most of our members live in FAR or PAR, we meet in a lounge in FAR on Saturday at 1:00. E-mail gokli@uiuc.edu if you're interested.

Have you ever been near DCL and felt the need for a cool, refreshing soda?  If so, you can pre-pay and just pick one up with your i-Card in the ACM office (1225 DCL.)   The talking, web-accessible vending machine is one of SIGBot's projects.  The proceeds are used to fund the future work of the SIG and to maintain the machine.
Visit Caffeine on the web at http://caffeine.acm.uiuc.edu/.  You can pre-pay via pay-pal and then stop by for a soda any time the office is open.

After a month-long hiatus, Chris Mitchell presented an introductory talk on C# and .Net WebServices yesterday.  Interested?  Come to our meetings.
