Association for
Computing Machinery

nics, movie nights, paint-balling, water balloon fights (which I always seem to lose, for some reason) and more.  All in all, we all come together to learn, educate, have fun, and try to make a difference in our community.
So what's happening with ACM this year? We've got a variety of speakers lined up from the industry to come talk to students, plenty of social events from the upcoming picnic to paintball, a number of (still hush-hush!) initiatives to create opportunities for students to interact with professors, other students, the corporate world, and our community, and of course, the many projects for 2002-2003 are in the planning stages already, and looking for enthusiastic and motivated students to put them into high gear. If you've been putting off joining ACM, now may be the best time to join!
So once again, welcome back to school. I'm extremely excited by the caliber of the students I've continued to meet over the past few days, and I know this bodes very well for the many activities of ACM. If you are so excited about ACM you bouncing off the walls and annoying your roommate, start coming to exec meetings, held Mondays at 5:30 PM at 2240 DCL. We're always looking for the people that are going to drive ACM and direct us towards becoming a better organization. Who knows? You may lead the next prizewinning project team at EOH, or you might be the next chair of ACM.
Feel free to email me at acm@uiuc.edu if I can help get you oriented, provide advice, or if you want to buy me coffee. I'll see you around the office; come challenge me to a XBOX game!

Welcome to ACM!
By Vilas Dhar, ACM Chairperson

To our many new students, a heartfelt welcome! And to our returning students, welcome back to a new ACM!
For those who don't know anything about us yet, ACM is the group on campus for computer interests. With over 500 members, we're one of the largest registered student organizations on campus, and we continue to grow. Our primary goal is simply to bring technology to the UIUC community, and bring together the people necessary to get the most interesting and useful applications out of that technology. With special interest groups in areas ranging from robotics to artificial intelligence, graphics to computer human interaction, and everything in between, we hit all the high points of computing technologies, and some things that have little to do with computers at all.
I'm always astounded at the results when we bring together the resources, the people, and the motivation to make things happen. This past year alone, we saw amazing projects like 3DOSX (featured on Slashdot!), Sounds and Visions 2002, the open source project Immersion, Digital Dancer, PULSE, and any number of others (check out the SIG descriptions to learn more about these). Sometimes all of this energy gets transformed into social events, and we see pic
