ACM@UIUC is holding the eighth annual Reflections | Projections conference this year on October 18-20, 2002. We expect to have over 600 student attendees and 30 corporate sponsors. There will be more than 14 sessions (individual talks, panel discussions, and workshops) that will encompass the past, present, and future of computing. This year's lineup features many exciting speakers, including Ryan Lackey, CEO of HavenCo, Miguel de Icaza, founder of the GNOME project, and Henrik Wann Jensen, inventor of photon mapping.
For more information, or to register for the conference, see our web page at http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/conference
Also be sure to take a look at Mechmania, our annual artificial intelligence programming competition. If you want to participate, register your team now as space is limited! http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/mechmania.

With a ton of new members and new project ideas, there's always something going on with the Monkeys. Recently we've been giving tutorials to get members up to speed with PHP, MySQL, server administration, and other web stuff. During downtime, we're planning fun activities like bowling, ice skating, and restaurant outings. In the next few weeks we will be starting on EOH projects.
A number of projects are in the works, all designed to be useful for UIUC students. First off, we'll be writing a web-based layer to the UIDirect student registration system. We'll then be tying that into the Schedulizer (tell it what classes you want to take -- or wildcards -- and it will register for you).
Also, we'll be working on a web-based newsgroup reader, an improved version of Webmail with built-in spam filtering, an online homework/exam repository, an ACM library system, a brand new forums system, a mailing-list search engine, and several other projects. The WebMonkeys are always open to new things. Got an idea? Bring it to a meeting.
Whether you're new to web development or you optimize Google in your spare time, you should check out a WebMonkeys meeting. Check the ACM web page for times.  And bring bananas.

ACM
Programming Contest

By Tony Chang

Meeting info:
There will be a meeting this Thursday (9-26) at 7pm. We'll meet in front of 1225 DCL and go from there. The first order of business is to determine a good time for everyone to meet in the future.

About the contest:
The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) is a chance for teams of three students to show off their programming prowess. They work together (one computer per team) and try to solve about 8 problems in 5 hours. Available languages to use are C/C++, Java, and even Pascal.

We will be meeting once a week to talk about team strategy and solve some problems and maybe learn some programming tricks. You don't have to be an excellent programmer to do well, you just have to be a strong thinker/problem solver; remember that it's a team contest so maybe one person can come up with an algorithm and someone else can code it.

If there are any questions, feel free to email me at tychang1@uiuc.edu

SIGOps has been holding Linux kernel workshops/tutorials at our meetings and will continue to for several to come. Besides that, we are currently investigating project ideas for EOH. Possibilities include device driver or perhaps file system work on an existing operating system.  Come on out, you don't really need any experience at all to get involved.
