SIGMusic is starting to pick up speed as we organize projects for this year. If you don't know already, our main purpose is to create a fusion of music, computers, and technology. Being a group that is performance-based, we welcome any technical interests to the organization as it would provide for a more well-rounded group. We plan to revive Electronic Cafe (eCafe) at the Courtyard Cafe in the Illini Union. We scheduled two performances this year, one in late November and one in Spring 2003 semester. We will compose, record, and mix music generated by synths and live instruments. It will be a well-balanced mixture of melody and harmony or authentic and artificial sounds. In addition, we plan on hosting a Digital Party, music basically composed and mixed through the genres of techno, etc. Some more technical projects are Sounds & Visions for the next school year's Engineering Open House (EOH) as well as a SIGMusic CD Album. We will also be hosting workshops (i.e. learning to be a DJ) as well as having speakers to talk about music and technology. We invite you to join us, no matter what kind of experience, background, or major you are! You will are sure to learn something!

SIGBot is learning quite a bit about all aspects of robot design and construction. From programming PICs to learning about Machine Vision to building precision machinery, SIGBot has it all. We received funding from SORF, and can get started in measurement, planning, and construction on our project. Orders are going out this week, and we're actively pursuing several leads towards receiving corporate donations of parts/grants. Professors are giving talks to our groups about various aspects of our design, truly bringing a high level of sophistication to our work. All in all, it's an exciting time in SIGBot. We hope to see you at our meetings!

Can a computer create interesting and dynamic stories? We think so. SIGArt is concentrating on applying machine learning to story generation. Creating realistic dialogue, plausible events and compelling plot elements are topics for discussion at upcoming meetings. If you're interested in this problem or artificial intelligence in general, come by and check it out.

CodeClub is chugging away at the NJAMD malloc debugger in an Extreme fashion. We are rewriting the debugger in C++ for performance reasons (yes, good C++ is faster than C), and we are adhering to the XP (eXtreme Programming) development process. We hope to have this port finished before Thanksgiving so that we can begin construction on a GUI to make the debugger suitable for CS225 next semester. If you're interested in memory management and efficient, high-quality software development, or just getting your name in a Linux distribution, do show up. XP is designed for fast changes and high developer turnover, so you will learn quick.
