The Gestural Music Interface is being coded right now. We're using the P5 glove DirectX-based API to put it together. The Gestural Music Interface is a control interface to manipulate real-time musical signals in a 3D virtual space, based on the P5's characteristics and finger bending. It's not quite recreating current instruments, but will be tailored just for someone using the glove on a computer. The lack of an analogy will actually be helpful since there won't be a preexistent conflicting memory. Going farther than that, imagine being able to virtually play an expensive or rare instrument. It's really cool stuff, and we could use your help. Keep up on the GMI by going to our website and joining in at our meetings. It's still not too late to get involved with our project either.

SIGUnix is working hard on QuuxBox, our set top multimedia system powered by Linux and Python. The QuuxBox architecture and runtime are both fairly stable and we're shifting gears to start writing applications for EOH. Applications are written using an XML user interface language to lay out the screen. Then, developers write QuuxBox processes to add functionality. The QuuxBox process is an object-oriented abstraction over the standard unix process. One application has been written so far -- an audio cd ripping and encoding application. We are looking for developers interested in writing applications wrapping their favorite unix media program with a sleek QuuxBox user interface.

Gamebuilders are gearing up for EOH and are working steadily on our projects. We are planning to show three different projects with a total of five games. We have MorrowPlots, a student simulator allowing you to create your own student and see if he can make it through school without falling apart; Gluttris, a Tetris-like game written with glut featuring an intelligent computer opponent; Hephaestus, a 3-D Breakout-style game named for the Greek god of Breakout; Stereopong, a 3-D pong game; and Vortex, a 3-D tube racer featuring many occurrences of spinning. Post-EOH will feature the rise of more games and things, so stop by a meeting if you too want to make some games and/or related game-type things.
