Engineering Open House (EOH) '94 is closing in fast. EOH this year is February 25th and 26th, so itÕs time to get a-hoppin' on those projects.
EOH is the most significant two-day time period in the College of Engineering. Reporters, high school students, and other college students from across the nation will converge upon U of I to see what the great minds in the College of Engineering have come up with. This year's theme is "Above and Beyond," and this is the 74th annual Engineering Open House. Student projects and research demonstrations will attempt to go "Above and Beyond" anything that has been done before, and this year's EOH promises to be one of the best in history for both ACM and the College of Engineering.
Come February 25th, ACM members will be proudly displaying the results of this yearÕs frequent all-nighters, both in the east atrium of DCL and the alcove across from the stairwell in DCLÕs main hall. Naturally, we will also highlight one special project by designating it as a central exhibit, to be displayed at Engineering Hall.
ACM has a variety of Special Interest Group (SIG) projects in the works for Engineering Open House. SigSoft is developing a movie morpher (on ACMÕs new RS/6000), which will input two movies and output a third that is a morph, or combination, of the two. Another subsidiary project of SigSoft, developed primarily by Chuck Remes, is a networked car battle game called Arena. SigArch will show off their electronic scrolling sign, to which people can email messages from anywhere on the Internet. SigNet will be highlighting their guide to the World Wide Web, Joel's Hierarchical Subject Index. Several Sigs have also teamed up with the University of Illinois Astronomical Society to develop an electronically-controlled telescope. These are, of course, just a few of the major projects ACM plans to demo at EOH; to find out the "latest and greatest" information on ongoing projects, check out the ACM EOH home page via NCSA Mosaic with the URL http://sleepless.cs.uiuc.edu/eoh.
If youÕd like to get involved with any of these projects, ACM can definitely use your help. All you have to do is stop in at any of ACMÕs various Sig meetings (times/places listed elsewhere in this issue) and ask what you can do to work on a project. Or, if you canÕt make the meetings, just email any of the SIG/project leaders to find out how you can help. In addition to project help, ACM also will need volunteers to stand watch over our exhibit area and equipment; this annual party/panic session begins on Thursday evening, the 24th of February, so stop by to help out! Or, if youÕre interested in helping the EOH central committee on the days leading up to and during EOH, they could also use your assistance.
To find out how you can participate in ACM Engineering Open House plans, mail Eric Adams (yesfan@uiuc.edu) or Dan Simms (artie@uiuc.edu). For information on helping the EOH central committee, mail Shula Patel (shula@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu).
