SigArch Update

by David Morgan

With Engineering Open House '96 barely a month away, SigArch has already begun its annual EOH-Frenzy. We've decided to start early this year because soldering, unlike coding, becomes quite painful when you fall asleep. Much to the surprise of the SigArch crew, we discovered that we didn't have enough projects in progress to keep members busy. As a result, the Cylindrical Display is back under the soldering iron. In memory of former ACM@UIUC Chair, Alan Braverman, the Cylindrical Display has been renamed to "The Can" for EOH '96.

Thanks to the esteemed Mr. Brian Swetland, one of our projects, the wireless PC is almost complete. We are now able to control any Infra-Red appliance over a standard serial port. Brian also wrote a way-bitchin' PC-based MC68HC11 development environment during the course of the project. We have also revived the Digital Nametag project for 1996, and we've managed to cut it down from its previous 1000 pound bulk to a handy 3.5 ounces.

Project CamBot is racing along as well. We're almost ready to have a printed-circuit board manufactured for the Network Interface Unit (a hardware-implemented TCP/IP stack). SigArch meets formally Thursdays at 6pm at the ACM office, but we can be found almost every night in L510 DCL as the frenzy continues.
