SigCAS/SigIR Update

by Ben Gross
Both SigCAS (the Special Interest Group for Computers and Society) and SigIR (the Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval) are in a little different vein than the other fourteen. So what's the difference, you ask? Well, both SigCAS and SigIR are essentially discussion groups. This means that we meet each week and talk about issues relating to the group that gathered during this week or that were left over from previous weeks. Sometimes we meet in the Digital Computer Lab (DCL), but more often than not we just head toward Murphy's. So what does this mean to me, you now ask? It means that if you heard about a cool topic that relates to the Sig you can bring it to the meeting and we can discuss it. It means that if you miss a week or two, that you are not behind in any way. It means that if you can't program in eight languages on five platforms, no one cares. It means that if you want to get away from volunteering for any more projects, no one will ask you, because there are no projects, just discussion. So if you like to discuss, argue, rant, throw around all those nifty keen ideas you have been having, or just sit back and listen, then stop by and check out SigCAS and SigIR.
