The music styles ran the gamut, including music generated with fractal algorithms, synthpop, and even an organ fugue! Two pieces, composed by Thomas Lawrence, consisted of sounds rendered solely on his Mac utilizing his own software, called "Out of Phase". Graphical interpretations of the music varied from fractals, to a 3-D equalizer, to a colossal spinning and contorting representation of Max Levchin's head. Levchin, chair of SIG Graph, created the highly detailed object by means of a 3-D scanner, allowing him to inflate his head on the huge projection screen, much to the amazement of the audience.
We had a difficult time keeping down the crowd-surfing, but in general, the concert ran smoothly. Head producer Dan Wellman, who conceived the idea for the show earlier this year, was pleased to see his brainchild unfold magnificently. In between the bites of his "Victory Banana", he reports that he's eager to do it all again, bigger and better, next semester.
Any interest in composing music or graphics for the next concert should be directed to Dan Wellman (wellman@uiuc.edu), and Max Levchin (m-levchin@uiuc.edu) respectively.
