SigNet

by Jason Wessel

For EOH this year, SigNet (the Special Interest Group for Networking) will by displaying three interactive networked projects. All of SigNet's project will be located in the East Atrium of DCL.

SkyView: SkyView is a "near-real-time" networked weather system for the U of I campus. Its primary goal is to provide weather information in a glance, through pictures of updated weather gauges. SkyView will also provide forecast information, storm warnings, and weather statistics for the previous week. It will be available as an X client and a set of pictures under Mosaic. To access SkyView, start NCSA Mosaic and open http://mrcnext.cso.uiuc.edu/skyLaunch.html. (Click here.)

Joel's Hierarchical Subject Index (JHSI): JHSI is an index to computer resources across the entire Internet. It takes a macro-to-micro approach for the classification of the information. Users start off with ten broad categories and move quickly through several subsets of any one category until they find the resource they are looking for. JHSI can also be accessed under NCSA Mosaic with http://www.cen.uiuc.edu/~jj9544/index.html. (Click here.)

CampusQuest: CampusQuest is an electronic, interactive map system of the U of I. The system will be able to bring up layouts of all the buildings on campus. A user can click on a part of the building to find out more information or locate a certain room, or can query the system to locate a certain building on campus. This project is only in its infant stages and is being demonstrated at EOH to generate ideas and other interests.

Beyond EOH, SigNet also has two workshops coming up:

  • 1. How a computer network works (3/16 7:00pm 1320 DCL)
  • 2. Unix network programing in C (3/30 7:00pm 1320 DCL)
  • If any of these projects interests you or if you have another networking idea of your own, come to a SigNet meeting at 7pm on Wednesday nights in 1102 DCL. No networking experience is necessary, and it's a great way to learn. If you have questions about SigNet, please send email to signet@uiuc.edu.
