You've probably allready thought of this, but I can't help imagining your system mapped on concentric balls, with lines connecting the hierarchy of the current folder. The ball would move (in a contrary movement to the mouse) as the mouse moves. And with a modifier key, you could zoom in and out.
And if you could resurface Atlantis, that would be fine too ;)
