Using Express Mail With Apple's Mail.app

1) Open Mail (Located in the Applications folder of your hard drive).

2) If you have never used Mail before, you will see the following window. If you do not see the window below, skip to step 4. Fill in the fields as shown below, using your email address, username, and password.

Note: you can only use express-smtp.cites.uiuc.edu as your outgoing mail server if you are connected directly to the UIUC network (UIUC residence halls, etc) -- if you connect to the internet from a private dorm, apartment, etc you will need to use your internet service provider's SMTP server.

3) Wait for the following dialog to appear, then click continue.

4) Select Preferences from the Mail menu.

5) Click on the Accounts button. (If you skipped to this step from step 1, you will need to click the "+" button to add a new account.) Then click on the Account Information tab. Verify or enter the information as it is shown below. Use your unique email address, username, and password when necessary.

6) Click on the Special Mailboxes tab and verify that the settings are the same as those shown below.

7) Click on the Advanced tab. Verify that the IMAP Path Prefix is INBOX and Use SSL is checked.

8) Close the preferences window. Locate the Express Mail folders in the drawer on the right. Click on the Drafts folder once, then select Use This Mailbox For > Drafts from the Mailbox menu. Repeat this step for the Sent and Trash folders.

9) After completing step 8, the In, Out, Drafts, Sent, and Trash mailboxes should have special icons next to them, as shown below.
