About MyCampus

Objective

To develop a native iPhone application that will syndicate essential at-a-glance information to U of I students. A user can launch the app to locate a building or rooom, find a place to eat, or figure out what to do on a Friday night, for example.

Audience

U of I students, faculty, employees, and visitors.

Core Values

MyCampus is about:

  • Off-line information
Accessing the web on an iPhone is often-times slow (especially if you're on EDGE), and important information about where you study or work is strewn across many websites. MyCampus hopes to unify the location of essential data into an application accessible off-line. Data can be refreshed, certainly, but the main hopes of MyCampus are to get information in people's hands as fast as possible.
  • Modularity
Each feature of MyCampus is encapsulated in its own tab, or plugin. In this way, users can decide for themselves which features are important, and can quickly access a particular feature without having to jump through many others. Each plugin in MyCampus is designed to do one thing, and do that thing really well.
  • Genericness
MyCampus is not tied to one campus. Instead, only a very small portion of the application is specific to one location. This allows schools or workplaces to adopt MyCampus with very little work while getting advanced features effortlessly.

Top Features

As previously stated, each core feature of MyCampus is found in a plugin. To learn about the plugins being developed for the application, see the plugins page.

Uniqueness

The iPhone is one of the fastest growing platforms, and provides a wealthy toolbox of technologies that will make MyCampus unique. For example, the application can obtain the user’s location to get location-specific data, or take advantage of the multi-touch capabilities of the phone to make the application as interactive and fun to use as possible. Additionally, the iPhone is an attractive platform because of the ease and breadth of distribution.
