Meeting Notes for 10/3/2005

  • We have a list of potential projects that we can pursue. There are 9 possible projects in total with a variety of professors
  • Jay Patel came to discuss the Overhaul project.
    • All those in attendence received the paper pertaining to this research; Chris Clausen also attended
    • Overhaul addresses the problem of flash crowds: a large influx of visitors crippling website features due to server load
    • Solution: Apache mod passes out fractions of the hosted content to each client, each of whom gain the rest of the content from each other
    • Solution turns itself on/off depending on immediate load and applicability.
    • Depends on Overhaul-enabled clients; others will be hosted normally
    • Very significant benefits have been realized both for large single documents and for multiple documents, especially in the worst-case measurements
    • Our function in the project can be either entirely implementation or implementation and some research function
    • It was asked how much time we should dedicate to this project; one to two hours a week seemed fine.
    • An overwhelming majority voted interest in the project; Luke asked that, if any were interested in another project, that they e-mail him; his slides should be on the wiki soon.
