Note: This has been preserved for archival reasons. You can no longer email the ACM sign. The ACM SignThe ACM Scrolling SignThe ACM Electronic Sign was the latest in crazy concepts from those wacky guys in ACM back in 1992-3. The project was started in 1992 as a hands on project to teach new members some of the fundamental skills that they would be need in future projects. The sign, a 64 by 8 pixel array of LED's that scrolls text messages, is currently located in the display case outside of the ACM Office. It has the ability to scroll messages in a number of "interesting" ways. To make things a little bit more interesting, SIGArch decided to put the sign on the internet, so now anyone can send mail to the ACM Sign and have it displayed outside of the office. In addition, the sign has it's own cs department account, and a ph entry [JJ: does not work 10/2001] providing information about the sign for users. Users who send mail to acmsign@uiuc.edu with subject lines of help or about can have instructions for the use of the sign sent to them through an automated mailing system. In addition, a subject of "plan" will result in the return of what the sign currently plans to display. [JJ: does not work 10/2001] The sign is regimental about keeping it's .plan file in order, so you can finger acmsign@acm.uiuc.edu to see what it plans to display as well.
