- Virtual
Anatomy Textbook
Last year was Sigbio’s revival of sorts when we displayed our interactive
WWW based Virtual Anatomy Textbook at Engineering Open House (EOH). This project, begun in 1995, aims to be a
good resource for college students and the like who wish to receive “filtered”
information on many biological issues. To unite the “lessons” we choose the human
body because it can properly exemplify many facets of biology. This year we would like
to add new lessons based around a particular physiological system in the body. Thus
far, we have completed the Lymphatic system and are currently searching for another.
- Student Pre-Medical Resource Forum
The forum will soon be the premier web site for pre-medical
students on this campus and around the country. Our site will include help on the MCAT, AMCAS, volunteering and
getting the perfect reccommendation. Also, we hope to have a message board and / or chat server up and running soon
to allow quick responses to questions.

CyberCell
-
CyberCell is a plan to model a single-cellular organism, the euglena,
via a computer program. Currently, the details are yet to be worked out,
but we do know that it will eventually be on the WWW and thus be
programmed in Java, JavaScript, CGI or a mixture thereof. To persons
wishing to be apart of this projects, please contacts the SigBio co-
chairs. In addition, no previous programming experience will be
required, but would be appreciated.
- Biological / Computer Internet Links
- This is a growing list of good internet sites which
are good examples of the power of the WWW to provide information and educate the public.
One of the first mass uses for the Internet was for scientists around the world to collaborate
on research to avoid too much redundancy and to bypass the reletively long time period required
for printed material to be distributed.
- Tours of Local Research Laboratories
-
Along with projects, Sigbio has visited a few labs around campus where computers
are being used to aid biological research. These tours are a great way to meet people
on the cutting edge of technology and learn about opportunities in the computing and
biological fields. Plus, we can usually find some pretty cool toys to play with!
