News from the Chair
Wanna be chair next semester?
Every year, it is recommended that the chair of a
SIG step down and have a replacement brought in.
SIGUnix's chair position has been switching over at the fall/spring
changeover, so a new chair needs to be decided for the spring.
Members are encouraged to talk to the current chair
if they are interested in taking over this position.
Being chair does not encompass taking on a bunch of responsibilities;
most notably, the chair has to attend a weekly
ACM meeting.
Ideas for EOH
EOH,
the Enginnering Open House, is held in late February.
SIGUnix should come up with and start working on ideas
for this mega-event soon.
Stereograms
-
Stereograms are the "Magic Eye" optical
illusion.
-
Animated stereograms might be very interesting,
if software exists.
CueCat
- Free barcode scanner available from Radio Shack
- Lots of available software available to analyze CueCat output
- There exists PAM modules for Linux for CueCat
- There exist online databases of UPC barcodes
- University ID's are scannable
-
By scanning ID's, we could help ACM tables at EOH sign-up
people at EOH to mailing lists and other
information stuff with ease, and coolness.
Comdex and other trade shows implement a similar system.
Project Updates
BugFixing
- met
- printed 80 pages of XMMS code
-
It appears playlist management is tightly integrated
with the overall working of the program, so the desired changes
will likely be very difficult.
pftp
- met
-
discussed the engineering of the decision making
processes involved
LimitGuard
- did not meet
- did communicate online
- Josh Michaels is the contact
- need to get real info from CCSO about dorm-specific
-
by working with CCSO, we might get into their good graces
by showing how we can help reduce their workload
NJAMD
- NJAMD appears to work in Redhat 7.0
Distribution
- need to burn more
- can get funding for writable CD's
- There exist lots of old CD's in office of distributions
- ACM doesn't appear to get lots of promotional distributions
