SigWeb has been assigned webmastering duties for ACM
and is working various web design projects.
Please email Albert Ko with any
questions.
Meeting Minutes:
9.16.99 - 3rd meeting
We talked more about our webmastering duties
and redesign for both the ACM and SigWeb pages.
We will be working next week in introducing
the basics of web design including basic HTML
layout at the next meeting while working on a
few preliminary site designs.
The Perl and Database Integration workshops will
be moved back to make time for the webmastering
project to get underway. The Perl workshop will be
held 3 weeks from now and the Database Integration
presentation will be the week after.
9.9.99 - 2nd meeting
We chose Sandeep Patel as our treasurer to
help handle our SORF funding. Also, we talked
about future projects and redesigning our pages
for a new look. We also talked about various
future workshops including a Perl and Database
Integration workshop.
12.01.98 - Web Improvement Workshop
Dylan Newhouse-Vitt, Steve Mycynek, Albert
Ko, and Valerie Franek presented on various
improvement topics, ranging from layout and
navigation to graphics and compatibility.
The workshop included a question and answer
period and was quite informal. Overall, it
seemed to benefit those attending and may be
followed up with another workshop next
semester.
The examples used at the workshop can be
found at the following URL:
http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/sigweb/workshop/
11.18.98 - Eighth Meeting
A few of us met with Steve Mycynek again, to
further discuss the web improvement workshop.
We planned out the details of the materials
we would present.
We also decided it would be better to meet
next semester to work on the database project.
11.11.98 - Seventh Meeting
Steve Mycynek, the coordinator for ACM's
promotional workshops, began the meeting off by
explaining an upcoming web improvement workshop.
This presentation will involve SIGWeb members
talking about various web topics, like graphics,
layout, etc. and will take place the first week
of September. We discussed potential topics
for the workshop, and Steve asked for volunteers.
After this discussion, we headed to one of the
lower level labs to learn more about Perl and
CGI scripts in general. Whitney Jackson had a
few examples we all looked over and tested out.
Next week we hope to continue in this
direction for our database project.
11.04.98 - Sixth Meeting
We further discussed the database project, with
Whitney Jackson leading the meeting. He talked
about using relational databases and discussed the
basics of how they work
Whitney created a page for this project, located
at:
http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/sigweb/fermiproj/
We'll further discuss this next week, and hope to
get some work done on it as well.
10.28.98 - Fifth Meeting
John Criswell presented on Argus Systems'
Gibraltar, software for secure online business
transactions.
John explained various issues related to
security on the Web in general, as well as
Argus' specific approach in creating their
software.
10.21.98 - Fourth Meeting
We started right off with a presentation by
Jack Long and Whitney Jackson on databases, from
the basics to their various uses with the web.
Jack talked a bit about CGI and scripts in
relation to databases and accessing them from
web pages.
After the presentation we decided to meet for
our FermiLab database project on the Wednesdays
when regular meetings aren't scheduled. Our
first such meeting will be on November 4th, same
time, same place.
This project may become an EOH project, though
nothing definite has been planned out.
10.14.98 - Third Meeting
We began the meeting by discussing some project
ideas for the group, as well as potential
presentations to have in the future.
We agreed on two projects that the group would
like to pursue:
(1) An ACM@UIUC t-shirt design competition,
based on the Web. We'd like to implement
voting on the designs, as well as a system
for ordering the shirts, once they're
purchased. We decided who would want to
work on design and layout, CGI, etc. We'll
discuss when to meet on the list.
(2) A web database project, which we'll further
learn about and discuss next Wednesday, at
an "extra" meeting.
We plan on having workshops and other
presentations, though none of these are definite
right now. Suggestions are welcome of course.
09.30.98 - Second Meeting
After introductions, Louann Wilcock spoke about
the University's Web Technology Group.
Louann talked about the various projects her
department has been involved in, including
various distance education programs and IDEA
Village, an online community.
She also spoke of their need for web help, both
in programming and with their help chat. If
you're interested, email her at lwilcock@uiuc.edu.

09.16.98 - First Meeting
About 30 people attended this meeting, collecting
in the office and then moving to 3211. We'll be
meeting there for the rest of the semester, unless
otherwise announced or posted.
We started the meeting with introductions, talking
about our majors and web background/knowledge. We
seem to have a varied group.
We talked about possible workshops and topics to
cover, including an HTML workshop, a CGI presentation,
improving existing home pages, web-safe graphics and
colors, etc.
I asked for suggestions for projects and a few were
discussed after the meeting, including future
presentations.
