Many of our members will
be involved in technical, leadership, and management projects. For
this reason, we want to make sure all favorable applicants have the initiative and responsibility to show up and present themselves professionally at an interview.
There are only a few student-run
entrepreneurial groups on campus.
OTCR is a technical consulting group and does not focus entirely on entrepreneurship.
CEO doesn't work with startups outside of their organization, they
don't necessarily emphasize the use of technology in startups, and they may be considered a passive organization in comparison to UBD. We are more
of an active involvement organization, involving
students into leadership, management, executive, and technical
roles. We also heavily emphasize the use of technology in a startup.
CEPS is a
Chinese entrepreneurial group. Our group does not focus on
any particular nationality.
We think involvement with multiple groups can be essential to a student,
depending on his/her needs. It's important to note that we support and encourage the initiative
of all groups mentioned above.
You
can learn more about each ACM and TEC by visiting their websites.
We are
a strategic partner of ACM and the student arm of
TEC.
Entrepreneurial
students can become involved in executive leadership and management projects,
since this is typically what they may be doing in a startup.
Students
with specialized skills, such as web design or application
development, are able to work directly with business owners
and other entrepreneurs on their startups to build their resume.
While we typically refer technical students to an ACM
SIG of
their interest, technical students seeking to pick up additional
skills such as leadership, management, and entrepreneurial
experience, are welcomed to apply for UBD.
Sure. We
don’t consider the GPA of a student (however many student organizations
do) because we don’t feel like it’s the best indication of
your potential or success as an entrepreneur. Many
successful entrepreneurs don’t even have college degrees ( Bill
Gates, Steve Jobs, Michael Dell), let alone
a high GPA.
Registered
student organizations are not allowed to pay students. However,
there are gifts given for oustanding involvement in projects and the organization.
Sure. UBD
is not for people who feel like they already have too much to do. You
can apply any time you want, but there are certain times during the year
where your chances of getting interviewed are highest.
At
your first interview, you’re required to wear business casual. At
weekly meetings with small groups, you can dress comfortably. At
monthly meetings, you need to wear business casual.
You
will ultimately decide how involved you get with UBD. Projects are
offered, but you will seldom have work that's required. We're
always in a better position to provide a stronger recommendation when
you're more involved. Typically, the more involved you are,
the more people you'll end up meeting, and the more experience you'll
walk away with.
This wouldn't be an organization if you never
contributed, though. You may occasionally be given assigned
projects.
Why do people go to the gym with
a workout partner? To get a boost of motivation, which allows
them to lift more weight and be pushed to the limits. The same
idea exists in the entrepreneurial initiative. We can team you
up, provide socials, and open up opportunities for networking.
